To collect and conserve for posterity, examples of all aspects relating to the history of written communication with an emphasis on its equipment, instruments and materials.

To establish a public resource and showcase for the history and development of the written and, in context, printed forms of human social communication, together with the technologies, ancient and modern, which supported them.

The museum is to include displays to illustrate:

  • The history of writing, its associated instruments, materials, and ephemera.
  • The diffusion of written information from clay tablets to the Post Office.
  • Printing: an overview to show the influences of writing upon typefaces.
  • Writing and printing for the disabled.
  • Computers: the future of writing and writing equipment - the introduction of digital pens and digital paper.

A list of objects to be seen in the above categories may be viewed in our provisional catalogue, to which many hundreds of items are to be added. The catalogue is currently being updated, allowing access to images of many of the items.
