Many people collect autographs of famous individuals, such as sportsmen, film stars, politicians and personalities in the news. The museum is no exception and has its own collection of autograph letters and historical documents. Shown here are just a few that represent some of the many categories that we hold. The top one is a document signed by Napoleon Bonaparte as emperor, agreeing to military expenditure. Nelson, Wellington, Marshal Soult, Kitchener, Roberts and Doenitz are among our many other military subjects. From the explorers we next have an envelope written by David Livingstone. The Arts and literature are well represented and include J. M. W. Turner, John Constable, Robert Southey, Charles Dickens, Edvard Grieg and the Beatles. From that category, the third example here is The Rolling Stones. The last item is a letter from Charles Manson, a member of whose cult was accused of the murder of the actress Sharon Stone. We have many documents relating to legal matters which include some of the Jack the Ripper suspects, such as Sir William Gull. |
